Among the 1185 Croatian islands one is golden, the Insula Aurea - the island of Krk. Located in the center of the Kvarner bay, it is considered one of the most attractive tourist destinations. The mild Mediterranean climate, favorable geographical position and diversity of natural and cultural beauties gave it, even in ancient times, the name "golden island". Cultural heritage has given it another name - the cradle of Croatian culture, and at the beginning of the twentieth century it the "sixth continent".

Throughout the island goes through the 45th parallel, longest part 38, and the widest about 20 kilometers. The coast is around 190 km long. The closest mainland is only a hundred meters away and its neighboring islands of Cres, Goli and Rab; belongs to him and several islets (the largest Plavnik has 17 km, and a smaller islet just 400 meters long); has an unusually varied relief, climbing from the north towards the south-eastern part of the picturesque gentle coves and lagoons, along fertile fields and dense forests with sub-mediterranean vegetation, to the parts of bare limestone and real mountain landscape. On the island of Krk there are three streams and two lakes.

On the highest mountain top, Obzovi (570 m), visitors may forget that they are on the island. There is a very specific phenomena - eg. Simmering flora contains about 1400 species of land plants, nearly half of the total flora in Croatia. Unique plant "Barbašova woodruff" world is a rarity, growing in the world exclusively in the Baška bay.
